received unit 2 days late got to love usps, very disapointed it came with all the info of the previous owner wich a wasen’t able to delet all of it yet,and also has his initials carved at the bottom of the unit.first try to update the os crashed good thing i backed up the files, and it’s not to acurate on the destination ex:says destination on the left when it’s actualy on the right,so far the building 3d feature doesen’t work.was able to suscribe to the 3 month free trafic info with AAA,but doesen’t work so far.everything was in the box exept a tiny screw wich is no big deal.
i would sugest to get a new unit if you can aford it,cause you get what you pay for.
but over all for the first gps experiance it’s worth the purchas
4 Stars Moving from a TomTom
So far so good with this refurb. It came with all the parts but one and that was a tiny safety screw for the mount that I can pick up at the hardware. I was able to register the device with Magellan no problem.
The Magellan did boot up with a CE Operating System error first time but, was a message that said to reboot and report if it continues. So far it has not come back. (TomTom OS has never error-ed)
The SMS texting feature does not work (Paired with BlackBerry). Magellan has a disclaimer on the text feature. It only works on some cell phones.
Using the hands free calling does work. The sound quality on the receiving end “from the built in speaker” is not the greatest.
Using the factory warranty (well) I hope it never comes up. I did buy the SquareTrade warranty with this to be safe.
No trial period on the Traffic Service so I have not turned it on yet.
My TomTom was and is still great and after 2 years my stepson has it. I needed a bigger screen and read good things on Megellan while shopping.

1 Star Case illogic
OK, so the GPS fits–but where do you put the car adapter cable, the car mount and the USB cable? NOT in this way too small case, that’s for certain! The GPS screen is not really protected. It rests against a coarse fabric if put face to the case, and is subject to scratching by anything else in the case if placed face out. A really POOR design by a company that should know better!
5 Stars Excellent Protection
Has good padding, and a stiff outer ring, so as to really protect the unit. My unit is a Garmin 1350 wide screen, and it fits securely with a strap inside. Not much room for anything else, except a cleaning cloth (it comes with this), but good “box”.
5 Stars Pleased with this product
Purchased this Caselogic for my Nuvi 265wt GPS. Fits nicely, room to zip without strain on zipper. Reinforced front to protect screen.

2 Stars Keep looking
The Magellan Triton 500 GPS performs the most rudimentary of functions well, but fails to offer much in the way of advantages over the competition.
As a very basic GPS, the Triton 500 does its job adequately. It has good battery life (about 10 hours) and gets a clean signal even through dense coverage. It has the everyday features like recording places you’ve been for points of reference and let’s you punch in new destinations you might have read about online. The built-in pressure sensor and compass allow navigation even when GPS signal is not available.
Unfortunately that’s about all you’ll get out of this gadget, apart from headaches, that is. Setup/install was not particularly user friendly, nor was it forgiving- be sure to follow the instructions exactly. One major negative of this device is its lack of built-in maps. That’s right, if you want the highly acclaimed National Geographic Topo maps (don’t forget an SD card, if you don’t have one already) you’ll be out some extra scratch so be sure to keep that in mind when comparing costs. To be fair, the Triton does include very basic maps but they only show major highways, which isn’t incredibly useful- and competing devices offer more out of box. The other problem is that the National Geographic maps appear to be little more than background images. Road/Street names were not recognized by the maps.
In the end, the Triton 500 was of little more use than as a comparison to paper maps. While that may be adequate for many users, you’re likely to find a cheaper unit if that’s all you want to do. For this price point, you’re better off looking for another model.
4 Stars Not all that bad
I read a lot of the negative reviews here, and frankly, didn’t experience any of the problems noticed. I think this is important to note in the context of the amazon vine program, where I got this for free to review. Most of non-vine, negative reviews are 1+ years old. I’m guessing this company read all those complaints, fixed the issues, and hence gave the units out for free in order to generate positive reviews for what is now a much better product.
I did have some issues setting this thing up at first. For some reason, 2 of my computers refused to read the CD necessary for installation, a third one did. I have no clue why. That created a bit of stress but I finally got everything going. I got a free map ($99 regular), and got the entire U.S. into this unit in about 10 hours of downloading. This obviously isn’t that great, since with y Garmin, it is MUCH faster. However, the Garmin car GPS isn’t as detailed.
The unit itself is very easy to use and navigate through. The battery lasts long, and it definetely is a durable and rugged GPS system.
I only have 2 real complaints:
1. I noticed that although this GPS tracks your location to within 5 feet in urban areas and 10 feet in backwood areas, it doesn’t actually “follow”. What I mean is: unlike my car’s GPS that shows you where you are now in real-time, this thing for some reason will not shift the map with your location as you move along; you have to move the map towards yoru location in order to see where your symbol, and hence you, are located. This is quite inconvenient, especially for long distances.
2. There is quite an issue it seems still with connectivity. It’s not a software issue, but many times I’ll connect the GPS to the computer and it will swith to “connected” to “waiting for PC” every second, literally. I have to unsecure the connection (which takes a while with how it connects to the GPS), and resecure it; this is quite annoying. However, since I’ve got all the maps loaded that I’ll ever really need, there’s no longer a reasont to connect this unit to the computer, so I can basically avoid this problem altogether.
Overall though, this is a nice unit to use in the “great outdoors”, but I would not substitute my Garmin gps for regular “urban” navigation.
3 Stars Not So Impressive Handheld GPS
I am a big fan of navigation system for cars. I started using it a long time ago and had a lot of fun with it. However, I have never used any kind of handheld GPS systemj, and the Magellan Triton 500 is the first one. Since the Triton 500 is a cooler looking than the GPS I am using for my car, I was expecting some fancy features that I cannot find on the car GPS system. But my expectation was not right and I do not use it much these days. Here is why.
I thought that the Triton 500 gives almost the same resolution of a map I have in an “under $100″ car GPS. But, it only shows major highways and big roads, not the local roads. So this device is not designed for rural areas for sure. The map shown on the color LCD display is very coarse. You cannot expect any details on the map. And when I tested it while I driving on the highway, it showed that I was off from the highway by 10-20 feet which is not right. Well I was testing a hiking GPS on a highway, so it was kind of my fault. To use the Triton 500 right, you have to install TOPO maps, and it is not free. You have to buy it, and the included map is, as I said above, pretty much the simplest map you can think of. And you also need an SD card to store detailed maps.
It runs on two AA batteries, however, it eats up the batteries pretty fast. I used Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries (2000mAh) that I think are pretty strong, however, it only lasted for 3-4 hours of extensive usage. So if you hike more than half the day, you should be prepared with another pair of batteries. Other reviewers stated that alkaline batteries last longer.
The built-in compass, barometer, and speedometer look pretty cool, and the compass can be operated by a built-in magnet. I like the brownish-orange color of this device, however, the material used for the case of the Triton 500 is quite disappointing. It feels like a cheap plastic for a sub $20 device. The touch of the buttons are not the best, too.
Although I have not used the Triton 500 extensively, this handheld GPS does not catch much of my attention. If I was a frequent hiker/climber, I might like it. But for now, I can only give 3 stars.
4 Stars Way better than people are giving it credit for.
I got a review unit of the Triton 500 to play with under the Amazon Vine program, and have been using it for the last three weeks, including a trip to Lake Tahoe over the 4th of July.
I have to say this is the first Magellan GPS that I’ve used in some years, but I’ve owned a couple, starting with a NAV-1000, the first ever handheld GPS (which cost me $2000-$3000 at the time I believe).
The Triton 500 is a relatively inexpensive “trail GPS” designed for outdoor use rather than for automotive trip routing etc.
It contains a SIRFStarIII receiver as most current GPS models from most manufacturers do these days (since they all gave up on making their own) and it has comparable (which is to say excellent) performance in the basic GPS functions.
I like the quality and construction of the Triton. The battery door screws securely to the unit and is made of the same plastic as the rest of the unit so I don’t understand the complaints I saw about it. I dropped the GPS onto concrete from about three feet once, and it survived with just a small scratch to the plastic which I sanded flat.
The current version comes with an offer of a free download of Topo USA map software. I installed a 2GB SD card and was able to put the entire Topo USA map set onto it. It’s broken up into eight-ish regions and you manually select which one you want at any particular time. These are vector based maps with more detailed roads than the (rather simplistic) basemap and they include altitude data which is nice as you can use it to determine your true elevation more accurately than GPS usually provides.
The Triton will also do something that (AFAIK) no Garmin unit will (and I’ve owned about a dozen of them) which is to also support downloadable *raster* maps. I have a very old copy of the Topo California set of scanned USGS Topo maps on CD-ROM. I was able to buy a $13 software update from National Geographic to get the newest software which lets you extract a region out of a map and download it to the Triton and then select it as the active map. If you like the USGS Topo maps this is pretty cool, since it puts an actual image of the map on the display. You can’t just download a whole state this way (the scanned maps are just too large) but it’s useful for planned offroad activities etc. You can have the vector Topo USA and some raster Topo sheet maps all on the GPS at the same time and switch between them as needed.
I tested out the software under Windows Vista 64 and had no problems uploading and downloading maps, tracks, etc.
Performance overall was very good. Battery life was reasonable, even having to turn the backlight on a lot (the transreflective display is not as visible in bright outdoor light as some of the Garmins).
Overall I thought it was a perfectly acceptable GPS for someone who wants to use it for Geocaching or other outdoor activities like hiking.
It’s tiny speaker (beeps on key presses and various events) is barely audible in a quiet room and definitely difficult to hear outdoors.
The digital compass and barometer seemed to work ok. As far as I can tell the barometer is not used in the GPS altitude computation (this is actually a feature in my opinion when compared to some Garmins that don’t let you disable the barometric altitude compensation).
Several of the various display screens are customizable with a pretty large set of data values that can be displayed.
There’s a neat track profile display that shows the elevation profile for a recorded track log which you can pan and zoom on so you can answer questions like what time did I reach that peak or that valley.
So for someone looking for an outdoors, offroad type of handheld GPS, you ought to be quite happy with what the Magellan Triton 500 is capable of, and you should be able to have a lot of fun with it.
G.
5 Stars I like it!
This is identical to the Triton 400 except that it contains a barometer for weather prediction. It is SO identical that I marked it and my Triton 400 with markers so that I know which is which.
I see all the bad reviews of this product and wonder what’s wrong with me because I was able to get it up and running without pain. I’m a neophyte when it comes to handheld GPS units; I use the one in my car a lot, and I am pretty good with a computer. I had the software installed, updated, and the firmware updated with no problems, and quickly. After that, the little GPS works great for my needs. It reads the satellites quickly and is very accurate, even inside. I can trace my steps around the inside of my house with it. The map that comes with it is limited, but you can buy others, and in fact there was a special included with this one that allowed me to download my choice of one free map. I use this on short hikes, mostly, to record my distance, and also on the bicycle. It is the perfect size and shape to fit my hand, very comfortable to hold, and it seems sturdy. It’s a bright color so it’s easy to find in a backpack or purse. I plan to also use it walking around unfamiliar cities–even if every street isn’t mapped, I know I will always be able to set my starting point (hotel, for example) and get back there without fail.
I really like this little GPS!

User Ratings and Reviews
5 Stars Great Product (works on motorcycles too)
I ordered two of these, one for myself and the other for my father. I also installed both of them an our bikes and they work perfectly.
As far as installation goes, I would recommend using a fuse tap (such as an add-a-circuit) from and auto parts store so that the converter box in the line doesn’t drain the battery if you don’t ride for a while. You may find, however that your fuse circuit is still hot because you may have relays on your fuse box, in that case, I would recommend installing a switch with the hot wire running into the fuse tap so that all you need to do is flip the switch off and the converter box will not use up your battery.
I don’t think the converter box uses up that much power, but if it is directly connected to your battery (or you have the fuse tap in a hot circuit ((by hot circuit, I mean that it is getting power even with the ignition off)) ), the converter box IS using power constantly, so that is why i recommend using a switch or a fuse tap to a switched circuit (meaning a circuit that is not receiving power when the ignition is off).
make sure you ground everything you install, or it won’t work, and make sure every new line has a fuse (why i recommend the fuse tap).
If you install a switch, you will have to ground the switch as well as the converter box, or the setup will not work.
If you have any question for motorcycle install, feel free to ask… I know how difficult it can be to find answers to these questions, but fortunately i found a setup that worked for me and my dad.
2 Stars Gilsson GUSB5V Direct Wire Cable
The mini USB connector is somewhat smaller than the cig. lighter connector USB standard with the garmin GPS. The L shape does not allow for direct connect through the access hole of some RAM mounts sold by Amazon for motorcycle hookup. This is a problem, I’m not quite show how I’m going to resolve.
5 Stars Works Great!
Have a Navigon 7200T, which does not have an official hard-wire option. After scouring the net for solutions, I came up with the Gilsson gusb5v-b. Amperage and connection matched – had a stero shop do the install – works great! No problems and the dashboard looks a lot cleaner than it did with a 12v coiled cord going to my power port. Shipping and delivery was favorable.
Thankls a lot – service and product A+
1 Star Will not power my 760
Maybe I’m missing something but this unit will not power my nuvi 760 or my daughters. I tried two to eliminate the issue of a bad GPS. The GPS unit just goes into mass storage mode when ever the power supply is connected to the USB port. If anyone knows what I need to do to get it to work on a nuvi 760 please drop me a line at dsprague at zoominternet dot net. I did enter the hidden menu by touching the battery icon for several second then plugged in the power supply but the gps still reverts back to mass storage mode when it is restarted. Also the green light on the power supply never illuminates but since there were no instructions included I’m not sure if it is supposed to be on whenever power is supplied or when the GPS is drawing power. The unit was wired directly to a 12 volt battery to test and eliminate any lack of power or ground supply and still no go.
5 Stars Best buy
I already installed the cable wuth the whaterproff mount froim ram mounts…rided but 12 hours…i can even put my cellphone to charge… (this was discharged by the used of the bluetooth with the gps…)

5 Stars Bean Bag for GPS receiver
The bean bag is handy and stays put on the dashboard. It is convenient to use and exactly want we needed.
5 Stars It Just Works!
It works just as advertised. Put it on the dash, the console, the passenger seat and it just stays there – period. Hard braking or cornering makes no difference, it stays put.
My only complaint, if you want to call it that, is I wish it were a bit smaller – but if were it might not work as well. That said it fits in the glove compartment with my TomTom attached, so I guess it’s small enough.
4 Stars Bean bag mount goes anywhere, stays anywhere!
It doesn’t matter which car I drive, my wife’s Crysler van or my PT or my Classic Harley, the bag stays in place on the dash somewhere and I can see my GPS. I coupled this with the Low Profile mount and it works awesome!
5 Stars Over a year of use, still never an issue…
This is the only product of this type I’ve ever owned and I have no reason to look anywhere else for a different style should I ever need another. Love the large footprint… and the fact that it stays where you put it. I own an Xterra which has a relatively narrow dash, as a result I have two corners hanging off the edge of the dash. Still not an issue, the thing stays put. Have been very happy with the product… youll be happy too~!
4 Stars GPS Beanbag
So far seems to be OK. It holds my Garmin fine and it has not lost its traction or its load. It is a little bulkier that I thought it was going to be and that is the only reason for 4 out of 5 stars.
