5 Stars Wicked-good bargain
This GPS unit has worked perfectly from the first moment, and the functions are so intuitive we almost don’t need the instruction manual. (Ladies won’t understand, but that scores high with us guys!)

Although the description on Amazon’s site says “…with Text-to-Speech,” it really doesn’t have that function. It announces upcoming turns very nicely, but it does not attempt to pronounce text we enter. -Which may be a good thing. It displays the name of the next street or highway very prominently, so who needs the electronic lady talking ALL the time?

In open country, it acquires satellites and begins navigating very quickly. (Much faster than on the H-60 Blackhawk I used to fly.) We live in a heavily-wooded area, and it takes a few seconds longer, -maybe as much as one minute some days.

I especially enjoy the display gotten to by tapping the compass heading in the upper-left corner of the map. It produces a screen indicating lat-long, distance to next significant waypoint, distance to last waypoint, elevation, ground speed, location (road, town, and ZIP code,) super-accurate time and date, and a rudimentary compass that indicates heading changes as small as 5 or 10 degrees.

Audio is loud enough that we don’t set it to max. Screen lighting is very good, and we love the night-display function.

On a recent trip into strange territory, it helped us find business and residence addresses flawlessly. We were short on time, and it essentially saved the day.

This is a very simple GPS with very good price.

4 Stars Best gps for under a 100
Now Magellan has replaced the 2008 1400 model with a newer one. The newer one is not called the 1400 and is a 2009 model. I paid $75 and got it factory refurbished. New was $150 and mine works great. You can research online what it can do. I will only go over the negatives which are the most import thing to cover after you research the positives for any device.

1. Lets say you know a road is under construction and should be avoided. You can exclude any road or highway exit from the list of turns and exits once it creates that list for your trip. Just click on the lower left corner to pull up the list. Then click on the turn just below the one you want to exclude and not click on the actual turn. Not a very intuitive design here. The problem is that half the time it does a poor job rerouting around the excluded road, freeway, or freeway exit.

2. Second negative is that it has short battery life (3 hours according to manual) and does not come with a recharger for outside the car. Nothing to worry about if its plugged into the car of course. I got the battery logo up to 80 percent while not plugged in and with in 20 minutes of usage it was back down to 10 percent life when it was not plugged in. Basically you have to have it plugged in at all times to work.

3. Third negative is that it can’t go on pedestrian mode so its bad for walking tours of cities your visiting.

4. Fourth negative is that it can’t display traffic info. If your stuck in traffic and it sees your not moving it will ask to reroute you if you want for the traffic but it doesn’t know if the reroute will get away from traffic. Or you can manually invoke a detour with a choice of miles for the detour. When I chose a 5 mile detour option it picked a path that would have wasted an extra 45 minutes. You can pick from a 3 to 12 mile range for a detour when you touch the detour button. I recommend just going with 3. One other flaw is that if you miss the next turn on a detour route it sets the route back to the original one so now you have to go back into the menu to select detour option. Sometimes when you select detour option it wants a uturn, when you don’t make the u turn it resets the course back to the original one and so once again you have to go back to the detour screen. Decent but only if you can make the u turn or next turn so it wont reset back to the original course.

For what you do get for $75 it is outstanding and I plan to keep it for awhile. Best device for under $100. I would not buy this for more than 100. other ones for less than 100 are not as good. From what I have read on Garmins that can take in traffic info for free there are still some bugs to be worked out (like false alerts or no alerts when there is traffic) so it is not worth the high price tag as of now. I think later when some of the bugs are worked out and prices go even more down I will upgrade to a garmin unless Magellan has something better at same cost.

Bought unit for this trip we are on. The unit didn’t work out of the box. Ordered on 7-5 rec’d 7-7 (Great), rec’d RMA on 7-10 and sent via Fed Ex on the 10th to their repair station in TN. The repair station rec’d on the 16th. WE STILL HAVEN’T REC’D IT!! Called them 2 times and they promised (in-as-much as ours was non-repairable) they would send us a new one, and it would arrive before we left on our trip. STILL WAITING!. Of course it doesn’t matter much because we are on the trip that we wanted it for.

5 Stars Worked Great in Las Vegas
I purchased the Magellan Traffic Link for a planned conference in Las Vegas. Since I did not know the area, I wanted to be able to navigate the traffic w/o relying on the radio, etc. The Traffic Link worked great. I was able to get notifications about costruction and detour, with time delay updates. We were even bold enough to take a side trip to Los Angeles, and then San Diego, and back to Las Vegas. I would recommend this for anyone with a Magellan unit. I have a Magellan RoadMate 1340 which worked much better than my Garmin.

The lack of monthly subscrition fees was the real reason I even considered the traffic link. Here in Cincinnati, OH its has acquired traffic info without problems for several months. I can’t say that it has re-routed me around any huge traffic incidents, but I also doubt that I have been traveling where such an occasion came up. Would I buy it again, not sure, would I use it if there were additional monthly subscription fees, deffinately not.

Having read some of the negative reviews, I wanted this to work, and I wanted to like it. In the sense that the cord provides power to the GPS, it works. In the sense that it gets past ‘Aquiring signal’ and actually gives you traffic info……….it does not.

And most unfortunate, I paid $50.00 for it and did not get it free as part of a package. Love the 4700 GPS! But this additional accessory adds nothing cost to the experience.

To the writers of previous reviews……..you were right, you told me so, but I had to see for myself if the stove was actually hot – it was.

3 Stars I guess it’s cool
The traffic report is VERY important in Los Angeles. This tells me when there are major accidents, I just wish it worked a little more like those live updates you see in the Times. The ads aren’t that distracting, especially because there is only one ad — every day I’m asked if I’d like 1500 points at Best Western. No thanks. Doesn’t it know I’m near home? But I was very wary of having ads in the car and only chose this one because I couldn’t figure out how to get the paid traffic service. Anyway, it has worked for me. It has Maggie suggest alternative routes while I’m driving when new traffic problems crop up.

I needed a replacement car adapter for my magellan GPS. I went to the Magellan website and found the item I needed. I then saw that I could order it from Amazon from a reseller. I checked a few dealers and found a New Hampshire dealer who had the adapter for half of what Magellan wanted at their website. I received the item within a week in perfect condition. I am happy with the adapter and also the great price I was able to buy it for. I would endorse the New Hampshire company and would buy again from them in the future. Great service and good prices are often hard to find via the internet.

4 Stars A serviceable case at a decent price
I lost the case that was included with the product when I bought it and ordered this as a replacement. After shopping for similar cases on Amazon, it seemed that this one offered the best price/performance ratio, despite some reviewers’ concerns about quality. I was not disappointed. It seems at least as well-designed and high-quality as the original and costs a lot less. I generally think that the makers of electronic products pare down the price of the main product for competitive reasons and then try to make it up by overcharging for ancillary products and services. An example is that the most recent version of my GPS omits the formerly standard equipment case entirely and them tries to charge an exorbitant price to buy the “factory approved” case. There are usually better options, as this experience demonstrates.

I bought this with my Garmin 360 and it is a very nice case. I didn’t know at the time that the Garmin comes with a Garmin case, so I probably wouldn’t have bought this, but it is still nice. The one that comes with the Garmin does not have a strap, so I may still use this one and have the other as a backup. The GPS fits in it fine and it is nice looking.

We’ve been big fans of Magellan’s Maestro line since it came out in early 2006. The Maestro interface is incredibly easy to use, even for those who are not completely comfortable with electronics. 3 Stars Can You Really Trust “Her?” Decided No, and We’re Returning It Tomorrow
I bought this for my wife because (a) she can get lost just leaving the driveway, and (b) it was “only” $87. (I hate the word “only,” especially when it’s in a TV ad for a Mercedes that’s “only” $54,000!) Still, if it didn’t work, it wouldn’t break the bank, and I could have returned it.

Now, it is true that my wife had no sense of direction. When she points, her pointer can go in any direction, and it’s usually wrong by at least 90

Before you buy this you need to know that while the price is excellent it is almost useless since it does not contain the most critical part, the cradle which actually holds the GPS unit on the bracket. This is not available from this seller only from MAGELLAN ($15 with shipping) and they are chronically out of stock. So I am in the same place I was in before making this purchase. If you need to replace the entire two piece original unit this product is not for you.
