The Garmin Nuvi 255 WT GPS is affordably priced, easy to use, packed with features and available in a variety of hip colors. The Nuvi 255WT, which is only available for Europe, is an unique unit as it is not only a satellite navigation system but a portable digital entertainment system and hiking reference guide- all in one.

Garmin Nuvi Sat Navs are known for quality sat nav systems and the 255WT GPS is no exception. It is also the more popular one in the Garmin ‘in car navigation’ range. So what makes this sat nav so special?

Safety & Simplicity In One
The Nuvi 255WT comes preloaded with City Navigator® NT map data for Europe. Simply touch the colour screen, key in your destination and the Nuvi takes you there with turn-by-turn spoken directions, which can be changed as you wish. It provides 2-D or 3-D mapping and smooth map redraw rates and the digital elevation maps show shaded contours for an understanding of the surrounding terrain. And other interesting features are:

Custom points of interest (POIs) – Examples are traffic blackspots and post offices and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.
HotFix™ satellite prediction – Allows to calculate your position faster to get you there quicker.
‘Where Am I?’ – Gives you details about your location in a flash.
Advanced Cyclops safety camera database – This helps you to travel with the confidence you are driving safely, responsibly and legally.
Garmin Lock™ – This is an inventive anti-theft protection system that uses GPS to lock to a secure location of your choice.
Avoid Traffic Jams
With the Garmin Nuvi 255WT GPS you get lifetime traffic alerts to provide dependable delay information and keep you aware of jams, accidents and roadworks on your route. This real-time data comes from reliable sources such as the Highways Agency, police traffic control centres and more than 8000 traffic flow cameras and sensors on motorways and trunk roads. The only thing you have to do is to flick between your navigation screen and congestion delay information, reassured you will be guided safely to your destination.

Navigation Of The Future
The Nuvi 255WT has built in photo navigation to revolutionise your sightseeing on those family trips out. This allows you to easily plan landmarks and attractions before you set off. Just choose and save location-tagged photographs from millions of Google Panoramio pictures in a list of family trips and just follow the step-by-step guidance to get to your favourite destinations. Other built-in travel tools include:

JPEG picture viewer
World travel clock with time zones
Currency and measurement converter
Calculator and more.
Personalise Your Sat Nav
The Garmin Nuvi 255WT sat nav allows you to choose your own background photograph. And if you wish to personalise your screen even further, you can select a new vehicle icon from the Garmin Garage. This way you can tailor your Garmin to suit your personality and style. And if you go abroad and struggles with the local language then the optional plug-in microSD cards such as Garmin Travel and Language Guides are a great option.

Enjoy the Outdoors.
If you enjoy the great outdoors and maybe go on long walks in unfamiliar surroundings then the 255WT is convenient for navigation by foot too. The unit has a sleek, slim design to fit comfortably in your pocket or purse and the rechargeable lithium-ion battery allows for up to 4 hours’ usage between charges. With a 4.3-inch widescreen display, you’ll always get the big picture and the sunlight-readable display is easy to view from any direction.

The Garmin Nuvi 255WT GPS is basically a simple, safe and portable navigation for Europe with widescreen display. This satellite navigation system is for those who want quality and not necessarily the cheapest price and to get you at your destination quickest and safest possible way.

How do you easily compare Garmin GPS units? As of the writing of this article, Garmin has listed on its site 27 automotive GPS, 10 basic handhelds, 26 mapping handhelds, 10 fitness GPS, and 4 cycling GPS. These numbers are current units. They do not include the discontinued models or other specialty models like marine, aviation, or motorcycle units.

You may be surprised to know that the best place to compare Garmin GPS is on the Garmin website.

Garmin has a feature on its website that will let you compare four GPS units side by side down to the most detailed level. Let’s walk through an example of how to do this.

Open up another window on your browser and go to the Garmin home page. You can read this article in this current window and perform the comparison in the other window. Just switch back and forth between windows as we proceed.

For our example, let’s compare the Garmin GPS units in the new Garmin Nuvi 1200 Series. On the Garmin home page, float your cursor over the “On the Road” link on the left of the screen. This will open a dropdown box where you will click “Automotive”. This will list all the current automotive GPS units.

On the right side of the screen, you will see a small square box by each unit. Click this box for the Nuvi 1200, 1250, and the 1260T. This will show a checkmark in each box.

When you have selected the units for the comparison, scroll to the top or the bottom of the screen and click the “Compare” button. This will present the units you have checked in a side by side comparison table showing all available features.

Scroll down this comparison table and look for gray shaded rows. The gray shading indicates that there are differences in the specific feature between the units in the comparison.

Garmin does not permit comparison of current units with discontinued units. If you want to do this, you can create the comparison table for each unit separately and copy them one at a time from the Garmin site and paste them into an Excel spreadsheet. Once in Excel, you may have to shift some of the rows in a column to line up features since some features that are listed in one of the units may not be listed in the other one.

Follow these instructions to easily compare Garmin GPS and help you select the GPS that is right for you.

John V. W. Howe is an entrepreneur, author, inventor, patent holder, husband, father, and grandfather. His degree in physics makes him curious about how things work and he was naturally fascinated with early GPS units and has followed their development.

All Garmin traffic GPS are in a group Garmin calls “FM traffic compatible”. This means these GPS can accept FM traffic data from an FM traffic receiver and show it on the GPS display. A subgroup of this larger group is titled “FM traffic included” which means that the GPS is sold with an integrated traffic receiver and subscription to the traffic service included in the purchase price.

Now that we have the definitions out of the way, let’s clear up one point that may surprise you. None of these Garmin GPS actually have the FM receiver built inside the GPS. The FM receiver is actually built into the cigarette lighter power plug that powers the GPS. The cord that powers the GPS also carries the data from the FM traffic receiver located in the power plug to the GPS.

On all current Garmin units, you can tell if the GPS has FM traffic included in the purchase price if the model number has the letter “T” in the last character position. Example: Garmin Nuvi 1490T.

If you purchase a GPS that includes traffic, you will have an easy time installing it since the GPS and the FM receiver are matched when they arrive together in the box.

If you purchased an FM Traffic compatible unit without the FM receiver (and associated subscription to the traffic service), you will need to do some research if you want to add the traffic service to your GPS.

The best place to find the information you need for this is on the Garmin website. Go to the Garmin home page. You will see a link on the top left of the page, “On the Road”. Move your cursor over this link and a drop down box with appear. Click the link “Automotive” in this box. This will bring up a page that lists all the current Garmin automotive GPS models.

On the top left of this page are several links, one of which will be “Traffic Receivers”. Click this link and all of the Garmin traffic receivers will be displayed. Note that there are also some satellite receivers shown, but we will not address those in this article.

The basic differences between these traffic receivers are the traffic service that they provide and the type of plug on the cord that plugs into the GPS. To find the FM traffic receiver for your Garmin Traffic GPS, click on the link to a specific receiver (Example: GTM™ 25 with lifetime traffic). When the page loads, you will see some tabs across the page toward the bottom of the screen. When you click on the “Products” tab, a page will display all the Garmin GPS that are compatible with the FM traffic receiver.

Check to see if your GPS is included and verify that the FM traffic service covers your area. The traffic service is provided by either Clear Channel Traffic Message Channel or NAVTEQ Traffic. Other subscriptions may be available under the “Accessories” tab (if displayed).

You should now have the information you need to make an intelligent decision about how to add traffic capability to your Garmin traffic GPS.

Good luck and good driving. Steer clear of traffic with your Garmin traffic GPS.

See the resource information below for more information about using the Garmin and Amazon websites to find the correct FM receiver for your Garmin traffic GPS.
